Iain mac Mhurchaidh 'ic Fhearchair, the poet more commonly known as John MacRae, could out-write and out-sing anyone else in the Highlands. But grasping landlords and unscrupulous tax collectors drive him to leave his beloved Scotland and relocate his family to the colony of North Carolina, where they settle on the banks of the Cape Fear River. That is where Kess, a ranger for a nation of magical Merfolk, hopes to find her beloved bard and once again hear one of his marvelous songs. As the American Revolution pits neighbor against neighbor, however, Kess and John MacRae must face another mortal threat — a monstrous flying creature with an insatiable taste for blood!
